For getting search results into Claude Code today, Tavily MCP is more reliable. It connected and returned answers. Exa MCP failed to authenticate with our free-tier key, so we could not evaluate its output quality.
Do Exa MCP and Tavily MCP require API keys?
Yes. Tavily uses TAVILY_API_KEY and has a free tier. Exa uses EXA_API_KEY. Our Exa free-tier key was rejected during testing.
Which MCP search server is best for citations?
Tavily is designed around citations. Exa focuses on neural semantic search. If cited sources matter most, start with Tavily.
